DAY BY DAY

“Day by day, what you think and what you do is who you become.”

 --He r a c l i t u s

I often wonder if I went out in the backyard each day with a shovel

and dug out one shovel of dirt and placed it on a pile, after a month

how deep would the hole be? How high would the pile be? After a

year? Five years? Ten Years? Twenty years? Fifty? Some days would

be easier than others, scooping out a shovel of soft dirt that comes

right out. Other days would be more difficult, striking hardened

ground or rocks and you must put maximum effort, use different

tools, or even get help just to shovel out the same amount of soil that

came out so easily just the day before. It may be raining. It could

be snowing. It is hot outside. It is cold outside. I do not feel like it

today. How is that process any different than everyday life? If you

skip days, you make no progress. Your pile does not grow. Your hole

is no deeper and may fill in, or your pile may recede. If you give up

and abandon your hole and pile the hole will fill in and your pile will

disappear.
