Jaime Jackson Safety Blog: HOW STRONG YOU REALLY ARE
HOW STRONG YOU REALLY ARE
“Promise me you’ll always remember: You’re
braver than you believe, and stronger than
you seem, and smarter than you think.”
Christopher Robin to Pooh
You do not know how strong you are until you must be. We have no
idea what we are truly capable of until we must rise to the occasion.
Until we are tested. It has been said that when it comes to our physical
limits of what we are truly capable of endurance wise we tend to tap
out at about 40%. This holds true for what we are capable of mentally
as well. We are capable of so much more than we think we are or
give ourselves credit for. Physically and mentally. That time we had
our backs against the wall, and we came out and we did it. Believe.
Also, that is a good reason to never put your enemy’s back against the
wall. It is in adversity and struggles where we surprise ourselves with
what we can do. When we look back, we see that is when we learn
the most. This is the most rewarding. Life is boring and unrewarding
if we plod through safely without being tested or pushed to our limits.
Push hard. Continue and see what you are truly capable of and more.
You are more powerful than you will ever realize.

Jaime Jackson Safety Blog: UPHILL
UPHILL
“Most of the important things in the world have been
accomplished by people who have kept on trying
when there seemed to be no hope at all.”
Dale Carnegie
I have heard it said that everything worthwhile is an uphill battle or a
struggle. This may be true to the extent that it inspires hard work and
advancing our skills leads to success and the satisfaction of a job
well done. Equally true are all the worthwhile things that come with
nature when you stop to soak in the beauty of the morning sunrise,
sunset, the stars, the moon, the rivers, lakes, and woods. I suppose
with nature, the universe, and preserving it has always taken work
and nowadays certainly is an uphill battle to preserve nature and what
comes naturally. Once you put in the work to get up that hill sometimes
you need to go back down. Do it all over again and again. Hill
repeats. Never rest on your laurels. Never fall victim to complacency.
Stagnant. Others in the world will pass you by. Just because it worked
before does not mean it will next time. Sometimes, even if it is just for
a little while you need to stop and stand on top of that hill and enjoy
the scenery. Savor it. Then look for the next hill to climb.

Jaime Jackson Safety Blog: THE RULE OF LAW
THE RULE OF LAW
Presidents from the early days of our Republic have pushed the boundaries of their authority. But virtually without exception, presidents have abided by court orders, even ones with which they strongly disagree. There are disturbing signs that the administration of President Trump will defy court orders. On several occasions, the administration has proclaimed that the President is not required to comply with court decisions. Even worse, on other occasions, members of the Trump administration have openly defied judicial orders. …We call on the President and all in the executive branch to abide by court orders. We urge Congress to play its role under the Constitution in checking abuses of presidential power. And we ask that the courts play their fundamental role in enforcing the Constitution of the United States.

Jaime Jackson Safety Blog: MANTRE
MANTRA
“Mood follows action.”
Rich Roll
A mantra can help keep us focused or bring us back to reminding us
what is important to us. A mantra such as, “I cannot always control
what happens to me or around me, but I can control how I choose
to react to it,” can help us control our temper or anxiety and keep
us grounded. A mantra when we are running up that hill, such as “I
am strong, I am strong,” can keep us moving and pushing forward.
A mantra such as: “thank you God for this beautiful day and all the
goodness it will bring” is a way to practice gratitude. “I am going to
be the best version of myself in this moment.” A mantra when we are
going to trial, deposition, or give a presentation, when our nerves are
running high, such as “I am calm, I am calm” can keep us relaxed
and focused. A mantra allows us to keep calm, relax, stay focused
and remind ourselves we are prepared and quite ready and perfectly
capable of accomplishing the task at hand, while keeping us within
our mission and value system we have created for ourselves. Repeat
your mantra when you are running or meditating.

Jaime Jackson Safety Blog: COURAGE
COURAGE
COURAGE
“Courage is grace under pressure.”
Ernest Hemingway
“Courage is being scared to death and saddling up anyway.”
John Wayne
Courage is knowing the right thing to do and doing it even when it is
hard. Courage is the will and discipline to prepare. Courage is something
we are born with, but we must recognize the courage is there. We
must look for it. Cultivate it. Grow it. Courage is not arrogance, stupidity
and doing foolish things. There is a difference between courage,
bravery, and foolishness, we must recognize the difference. Courage
is standing up for what you know is right. Pursuing the right things.
Doing our best. Making good choices. Taking care of ourselves and
taking care of others is courage. Sometimes courage is not always
saddling up anyway and doing something, it can also be restraint or
temperance and not doing anything. Self- control. Courage is setting
aside your own doubts, what other people may think and doing your
best, no matter what. Courage is in us. It is in there. It may not always
feel like it, but trust yourself, know that you have the courage. Everyone
is scared, nervous, apprehensive, excited, anxious, whatever label
you choose to put on it. If you do not have butterflies in your stomach
or your stomach does not feel like a bowl full of jelly it means you do
not care or your dead inside. Take the energy. Take the excitement,
the “butterflies” and use it to your advantage to stay focused, do
something in the moment, breathe deeply and relish the experience.
You are well prepared. You are unique. You have the skill. You have
the power. You are plenty capable of getting the job done. Who cares
what other people think about how you look, your hair or whatever
imagined up fears or concerns you have? You have the power, and
it ought not to be wasted. Rise to the occasion. Banish all self-doubt.
Without courage we cannot practice kindness, honesty, generosity,
or truthfulness. Courage. What is courage to you? It means standing
up. Being resolute in what you know deep down in your soul is right.
Courage is not puffery, recklessness, or being foolhardy. Courage is
being prepared. Courage is not giving in to what others may try to
force on you when you know it is wrong. Do the right thing. Do your
best. That is courageous.
“Courage is not having the strength to go on; it is
going on when you don’t have the strength.”
Theodore Roosevelt

Jaime Jackson Safety Blog: KEEP GOING
KEEP GOING
“The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands
in moments of comfort and convenience, but where
he stands at times of challenge and controversy.”
Martin Luther King, Jr.
The going gets tough sometimes. There is a lot of tough going in life,
and when we feel that way we just need to keep going. It will inevitably
get better. We will be the better person or better for it because we kept
going. Struggled through and never faltered. It is like mile two in a 5K
race or mile nine in a half marathon or mile 18 in a marathon, there
is always a tough stretch, a wall, but if we push on, we will reach new
heights. New horizons. New levels. We will get the job done. It is not
given to us on a silver platter. It is not worth it if it was. We must earn
it. Then the reward is worth it. Then we feel the sense of worthiness.
The sense of accomplishment. We did it. As Winston Churchill said,
“we have just got to keep buggering on!”

Jaime Jackson Safety Blog: MOTIVATION
MOTIVATION
“What you do today can improve all your tomorrows.”
Ralph Marston
We do not always feel motivated. In fact, some days we may go out
of our way to avoid the task at hand. This is when our discipline must
kick in. We are not always motivated so we must be disciplined. As
usual it comes down to just getting started. Once we get started, we
find our flow. On those rare occasions we just do not even find our
flow, when we complete the task at hand, when we are done, we feel
better about ourselves than how we would feel if we skipped out on
the workout, work, or whatever job needed to be done. We are going
to have to get it done at some point, so why not just get it done? The
satisfaction of a job well done, or even just getting it done is way better
than the feeling of guilt or regret of not doing it. Lack of motivation can
be just another form of resistance we need to overcome. So, step up
to the start line and just get going.

BE A GIANT
“If I have seen further, it is by standing
on the shoulders of giants.”
Isaac Newton
Everything builds on itself. Nothing is new. Our thoughts. Our ideas.
Our actions, which all may seem original, or we may think they are,
but consciously or unconsciously we are taking the seeds of someone
else’s thoughts, ideas or work and growing them. Improving them.
Making them bigger or better with fresh insights and new points of
view. Different environments that are more receptive to ideas or work.
History repeats itself for sure. Make no mistake, many critical thinkers
and “inventors” have come forth with fantastically new concepts, ideas,
and improvements, but all this is building on someone else’s foundational
work. New breakthroughs and “improvements” may come, but
for all the unheralded or long forgotten work of many, many others
that started the ball bouncing down the path, the breakthrough innovations
would have been much delayed. We all rely on those who came
before us and around us. Give credit where credit is due and be that
giant for someone else in the future. We learn so much from those
who came before us, or we should if we only look. As it is often said,
“history repeats itself.” Technology may be vastly different, but the
underlying principles, problems, issues, human nature, rarely change.
Chances are someone has been there and done that. Learn from
other people’s mistakes. Improve upon them and make them better.
Learn from other people’s experiences and wisdom. There are so
many people in the history of the world that we can gain insight and
lessons from. Whether it be “ancient history” like Marcus Aurelius and
Seneca or “modern times” like people who are alive today, over the
last few decades and centuries. Learn from the best. Stand on the
shoulders of giants. Gain fundamental insights into what great minds
have learned before us and then look at it from our own point of view
and how to make it better. Adapt to our own environments. If you just
stand on their shoulders, you will see further than the crowd.

Jaime Jackson Safety Blog: INNER STRENGTH
INNER STRENGTH
“The sun shines not on us but in us.”
John Muir
We all have it. Some people may be better at tapping into it and going
deeper than others, but it is in there somewhere. Where does it come
from? Fortitude, persistence, resilience, preparation, relentlessness,
wisdom, courage, patience, strength, whatever label we choose to
put on it, these are just words we use. What counts is what we do
and how we do it. We may never know the exact answer to whatever
divine providence, or the universe has placed within us, or whatever
we have grown, developed, cultivated within ourselves, or both. We
are capable of things or so much more than what we ever “thought”
possible. The choices we make based on our values are the foundation
for everything we do. The hero and the coward feel the same inside.
Some people just make better choices. Some people are simply better
at hiding it. Choose courage. Choose truth. Choose to do your best no
matter what the circumstances may be. We may never know where
this inner strength comes from. Do your best and use it to the best of
your abilities. Be the best version of yourself in the moment you are
faced with it. Believe in yourself. Banish all doubt. A little doubt is ok,
it helps us prepare. The only true limitations are the limits we place on
ourselves. Challenge yourself regularly. Take on interesting challenges
that force us to grow. We do not always get to choose the load, but
we get to choose how we carry it. We are what we believe ourselves
to be. Do not lie to yourself. Do not fool yourself. Avoid constantly
comparing yourself to other people. Believe in yourself.
